Winning a Boat of the Year (BOTY) award says a lot about a designer and a builder. Chemistry. There's gotta be great chemistry.

For Lake County-based Tartan Yachts the chemistry is a perfect blend of superb engineering design, manufacturing expertise, and management savvy. The Tartan 4000 model has won two awards -- both the 2012 Cruising World BOTY for Best Midsize Cruiser (40-45 foot) and Sailing World's Best Performance Cruiser.

Cruising World and Sailing World staff members were at the Tartan factory in Painesville this past week to present the awards and to recognize Tartan employees from the Fairport and Painesville plants.

Tartan owner, Steve Malbasa's enthusiasm and pride showed as he posed for pictures with Tartan employees. Everybody was smiling and happy, something you don't see so often in this turbulent economy.

"It's an honor to win the Boat of the Year award from either publication, but to win the award from both magazines for the Tartan 4000 in the same year is very exciting," he commented. "Our entire team here at Tartan Yachts takes pride in every boat we build and being able to accept the award at the factory surrounded by the whole team makes it even more rewarding."

Although they belong to the same publishing group, there are differences in how panelists from each of the two magazines rate the nominees. Sailing World's scrutiny emphasizes racing and performance criteria. Cruising World considers a broad range of criteria: seaworthiness, comfort, safety, ease of maintenance, sailing performance, design and construction, and suitability for purposes intended. BOTY submissions must adhere to stringent rules and it takes a lot of planning and work just to enter the competition. The Tartan 4000 was in the running with 34 boats total considered by the magazines.

Tartan Yachts is a Lake County success story. As with any 50-year-old company, Tartan has had its ups and downs. Orders are increasing for these beautiful yachts. Once again, the time is right. And, the chemistry is perfect. This legendary boat builder is making history today for the next half-century with its well-built, luxurious performers. Thanks to smart business management and people skills, the company is growing and putting local folks to work. Anyway you look at it, Tartan Yachts is a winner.
