Retail giant Target has come under fire for offering a plus-size dress in 'Manatee Gray' while the standard size comes in 'Dark Heather Gray.'
An outraged customer spotted the discrepancy while browsing Target's website and brought it to the company's attention on social media site Twitter.
Target promptly apologized for the insensitive mix-up and explained that the oversight was due to a miscommunication between two different teams of buyers handling the dresses.
Spokesman Joshua Thomas told Forbes that "Manatee Gray" is used to describe products throughout Target's catalog, including women's clothing in all sizes.
In this case, the purchasing teams didn’t coordinate when inputting the product information for the site, resulting in one using the color’s official name and the other eyeballing it.
“We apologize for any discomfort this might have caused and are working to update the name of the dress to reflect Dark Heather Gray,” Thomas told Forbes.
“This was an unfortunate oversight and we’ll take it into consideration moving forward.”
The "Manatee Grey" version of the Mossimo Women's Plus-Size Kimono Maxi Dress does not currently appear on Target.com.
Other retailers have also recently come under fire for using offensive product descriptions.
In 2010, Urban Outfitters sparked outrage when it labeled a T-shirt "Obama/Black."
The store later withdrew the shirt and apologized for the oversight.
