Why is there a Target dress apology in the news? It seems that Target labeled a plus sized dress as "Manatee Gray" while the misses size was simply called "Dark Heather Gray," according to an April 4 Daily Mail report.
Customers were outraged when they noticed the color name difference on the Target website. They went to Twitter to point out the possibly offensive color name differences. Susan Clemens took to the social media website to let Target know she was not pleased about the discrepancy in names. She tweeted,
"What the. Plus sized women get 'Manatee Grey' while standard sizes are 'Dark Heather Grey.'"
According to Joshua Thomas, the color "Manatee Gray" is used throughout the company's website. Even so, the teams who were in charge of the Mossimo Kimono maxi dress in misses and plus sizes did not coordinate when coming up for names for the garment.
The Target dress apology began on Twitter. The company tweeted,
"We apologize for this unintentional oversight and never intend to offend our guests. We've heard you, and we're working to fix it ASAP."
Ultimately, Target took down the dress from its website and is working to make both listings the same. Of course, the reason people were offended is because a Manatee is a large, gray animal. It seems like that if the smaller sizes of this dress also carried that name, then it may not have seemed so offensive.
What do you think? Is this Target dress apology blown out of proportion? Do you think a plus size dress in the color "Manatee Gray" is offensive? Would you have even noticed the difference in names if you were online shopping?
Target is an incredibly popular place to buy dresses. Even the First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, is often seen out in her bargain Target dresses. Hopefully this unfortunate error does not cause major backlash against the stylish, comfortable, affordable garments.
