Target apologized on Thursday for outraging customers by changing the color of the Mossimo Kimono maxi dress from ‘dark heather grey’ to ‘manatee gray’.
The Christian Post reports on April 5, 2013, that one of the online shoppers noticed the change in the name while surfing through the products put on sale. The color of the dress called Manatee pointed out towards a large aquatic marine mammal.
The color description proved to be offensive on the part of the plus sized women customers and thus sparked an outrage.
Several comments about Target’s changed description were circulated frequently on the Internet. A photo of the label went viral online.
Christianpost mentions that embarrassed Target issued an apology stating that the offensive dress color label was merely an "unintended oversight."
One of the representatives from the Target store also said that the color ‘manatee gray’ was used for so many items in the store including rain boots, towels and shirts.
Target spokeswoman Jessica Deede said in a statement which read, "We never want to offend any of our guests. We apologize for any discomfort that we may have caused.
"We are in the process of fixing the discrepancy and updating Target.com so the gray dress will be available in all styles … We're working on updating our systems right now."
