Target won't sell the new Beyonce album because iTunes released it first. If you think that this sounds like a crazy ex-girlfriend situation, you're totally right. On Dec. 17 it was reported that Target has decided not to carry Bey's latest self-titled album because she decided to have the album released digitally before releasing a hard copy CD.
The thought process must be that Target feels as though not many customers will purchase the hard copy of the album if they already downloaded it on iTunes -- but that's debatable. Since this album was a total surprise, Beyonce fans couldn't download it fast enough on the night of its release and iTunes even crashed for a bit.
Since Target knows Beyonce's album was so popular on iTunes, the store likely figures that people aren't going to want to pay twice -- but is that really the case? Generally speaking, true fans still like to have an album in their hands because it is like a piece of memorabilia.
Do you think Target it making a mistake by choosing not to carry Beyonce's new album?
