Target apologizes for 'Manatee' dress wording after plus-size backlash

Target Corporation issued an apology over a dress label's wording. Tuesday, an eagle-eyed shopper on the retailer's website noticed Mossimo Womens Plus-Size Kimono Maxi Dress was labeled "Manatee Grey" while standard sizes were called "Dark Heather Grey." She tweeted about the finding and a backlash followed. In the end, Target apologized for the error and removed the label, citing an April 5 UPI report.

Susan Clemens was surfing Target.com for some dress picks when she read something that caught her attention. A popular plus-size dress was given the color of a popular blubbery aquatic animal primarily seen in Florida waters. However, dresses in the same lines that were standard or even petite, were given another benign name.

Stunned by the "discrepancy," the shopper posted a message about what she seen on her Twitter timeline.

"What the. Plus sized women get 'Manatee Grey' while standard sizes are 'Dark Heather Grey.' @Target #notbuyingit pic.twitter.com/nzHNYoytnp," the tweet read.

After the retailer became a Target for backlash over the labeling, it apologized in a tweet to fans and consumers for the error, citing a CBS report.

"We apologize for any discomfort this might have caused and are working to update the name of the dress to reflect Dark Heather Gray. This was an unfortunate oversight."

According to a company spokesperson, the problem occurred because two buyers of the same dress line didn't communicate when coming up with color names.

After Target apologized for the dress labeling error, the shopper said that she remains a fan and is not all concerned about the oversight.

Ironically, the plus-size dress in question was $3.00 cheaper. Imagine that?
