Tango anyone?: Music Center Plaza hosts free dance lessons

Are you looking to pick up your activity a little? There are lots of events going on this summer that will get you moving, and grooving. The best part? Many of them are free.

What are you doing this Friday evening? You are invited to head to the Music Center plaza to join in the ongoing Dance Downtown event. This week, July 16, you have the opportunity to give the tango a spin, accompanied by the sounds of live Argentinean music spun by a deejay.

No dance experience is necessary and in this case, the old adage "It takes two to tango" doesn't hold true because you don't have to come with a partner.

The under-the-stars event runs from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m., with lessons starting at 6:30 p.m. Your tango tutelage is free, though donations are welcome.

You will have to pay $9 for parking in the Music Center garage, unless you've got a better idea on where to stash your car. You can also visit www.mta.net for information on how you can get to the plaza via the MTA/Red Line.

Each of the Friday evening dance sessions is taught by volunteers for the Music Center's Active Arts  program, in which enthusiastic artists share their craft with the community.

Future boogie-centric Dance Downtown events include Zydeco (July 30), Disco Night (Aug. 13), Throwback Night, featuring '60s dances (Aug. 27), and Samba (Sept. 10).

The Music Center (135 N. Grand Ave., Los Angeles 90012) is located in downtown Los Angeles on Grand Avenue between First and Temple streets.

What are you waiting for? Get out your dancing shoes (or at least some comfortable footwear) and get ready to shine.
