Tangents will begin its 2014 season next month

Regular readers should be familiar with Tangents, a highly innovative concert series conceived to focus on the diversity and depth of the contemporary guitar repertoire, launched by guitarists Giacomo Fiore and Steve Lin at the beginning of 2012. With generous support from the Zellerbach Family Foundation (based here in San Francisco) and the Foundation for Contemporary Arts (based in New York), Tangents will launch its 2014 season at the beginning of next month. This will be a solo recital by Dan Lippel, who will perform on both acoustic and electric guitars, as well as electronics.

That latter category will be particularly represented by the tenth of an ongoing series of compositions by Mario Davidovsky called “Synchronisms.” Each of these pieces explores the possibilities for interactions between one or more performers and a tape of electronic sounds. (Davidovsky has been composing these pieces since 1962, and he is still alive and active.) Lippel will perform the piece in this set that Davidovsky composed in 1992 in which there is a single performer playing guitar. The program will also include Elliott Carter’s 1997 composition “Shard,” as well as pieces by Dai Fujikura, Ethan Wickman, Stephen Jaffe, Vineet Shende, and Van Stiefel.

Lippel’s recital will take place at 5 p.m. on Sunday, February 9, at the Center for New Music (55 Taylor Street, half a block north of the corner of Market Street). (Note that this is a change from the usual schedule of concerts at the Chapel of the Unitarian Universalist Church of San Francisco). Admission will be $15 with a special $10 rate for students with ID and members of the Center for New Music. Brown Paper Tickets has set up an event page for advance purchase. Further information about this and future concerts for the season can also be found at the Tangents Web site.
