Big hair, everywhere, don’t you forget about Rubix Cubed. Let us travel back in time where skirts were made of snake skin, Tubbs and Crocket’s pastel t-shirts under an Armani jacket and linen pants was the hottest fashion trend for men. And women, couldn’t have big enough hair. This is the eighties! Let’s face it, we all watched Miami Vice and thought how cool it was that there was a police officer who could afford Armani and wear pastel and get away with it. The eighties was the only era that could pull that off and what a better way to relive then to go Back to the Future and party with Tampa’s very own, Rubix Cubed.

Rubix Cubed plays the Tampa Indie scene and now will be heading to The House of Blues in Orlando. They play eighties music from Duran Duran, Cheap Trick, Madonna and so many other eighties greatest!

Chris Stainton, the leader of the band, says “Rubix Cubed was a project that took a long time to get off the ground. We formed and started playing shows in 2006. The concept was born in 1998, however. We picked the ‘80s, and specifically the pop, new wave, retro ‘80s because the music is fun. The ‘80s,as we remember them, were all about fun, upbeat, new ideas, technology, bright colors, and bubbly personalities.”

When visiting Rubix Cubed web page your eyes will immediately remind you of the infamous mauve color of the eighties. The pink background of www.rubixcubedband.com, forces you to remember the pastel colors and the upbeat fun music. The eighties were fun and they still are with the help from Chris Stainton and Rubix Cubed.

Rubix Cubed’s sound is “most like the B-52’s,” says Stainton, but they can recreate the sounds of many, many eighties bands and that particular sound we are all so familiar with. Chris explains that Rubix Cubed sound has a “solid bass and drums, fun guitars, squeaky eclectic vocals, and party keyboards,” Keyboards! Oh yes, who can forget the infamous sound of the keyboard in most of the 80's songs? Chris continues and says “Rush, since 1981, was and continues to be my major influence, inspiration, and musical role model.”

Like the radio stations, Chris says Rubix Cubed does “all covers, all ‘80s, all the time.” Fantastic for those of us who love the eighties!

Another plus for Chris is his partner in vocals, his wife Michelle.  The two met in college in theater class and love performing live. He says, “Performing live creates bonds between musicians, and that is one thing we get to share, for shows like the June 6 at the House of Blues concert.” The other members that make Rubix Cubed so popular are, “ Bender (Steven Dillenbeck), Magnum (Jason Edwards), Micky (Michelle Stainton), Tiffany (Penny Carlton), Ponyboy (Stevan Polansky) and Crockett (Chris Stainton), all very familiar character names from Breakfast Club to The Outsiders, makes Rubix Cubed so unique.

Rubix Cubed has been one of the best Tampa Indie bands to play at the Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg. Chris stated that the House of Blues was a huge show with over 2400 ‘frenzied eighties fans in costume’ was a truly interesting experience for a cover band.

Chris also states the rewards of being a huge cover band, one which was a personal favorite, the Red Dawn 2009 tour. Chris says, “when we traveled to the Pearl of the Antilles, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to perform our show for the troops and families stationed there.”  Chris feels that was a true personal reward to the band.

While we remember when MTV launched and how addictive it was, we can now enjoy and follow a personal healthy vice, Rubix Cubed. The eighties is an era that can be relived and enjoyed to the fullest by following Rubix Cubed at their local venues. Bring your fish-net stockings, make your hair big and crunchy with whatever hair product you can get your hands on and your Miami Vice’s Crockett style fashion to Tampa’s sister city, Orlando on June 6, 2010 where Rubix Cubed will be in the House of Blues and explode with the real ‘retro’ sounds you need to keep reminding yourself of your most exciting years ever.  The 80’s will continue to thrive with Rubix Cubed.

Travel back in time and dance along with Rubix Cubed at the upcoming venues. Check out their performances and have a blast from the past.
