(Tampa Bay, FL) Tampa’s Lou Piniella is very close to rejoining the N.Y. Yankees as a television color analyst on the team’s YES network as well as serving as a spring training instructor in 2012 according to Bob Raissman of the N.Y. Daily News. Piniella worked for the San Francisco Giants as a consultant last season after retiring as manager of the Chicago Cubs.
According to industry sources, Piniella will do a limited number of appearances for YES in the broadcast booth and studio joining the already large roster of Yankee broadcasters which include Ken Singleton, John Flaherty, Paul O’Neill, David Cone, Al Leiter and play-by-play man Michael Kay.
Lou Piniella managed the Yankees in the late 80’s. After George Steinbrenner fired him in 1988, Lou did a season in the Yankees broadcast booth before heading the Cincinnati Reds where he won the World Series in 1990.
Piniella has managed the Seattle Mariners, Tampa Bay Rays and Chicago Cubs.
After leaving the Rays 2006, Piniella worked for Fox Sports on its major league baseball telecasts as a color analyst.
