Let's call it Politicians Breaking Bad.
Breaking Bad in a way which has sent shock waves through Tampa, the entire country...indeed the world...with the simple act of locking down the pocket book of the U.S. Government in a well orchestrated, albeit ill conceived move to put it in the face of the Democrats, the President and anybody in the country who actually has the time to watch all of the talking heads chewing at each other on cable TV - indeed, one woman anchor literally tearing her hair - like a pack of rabid, but well educated dogs.
And the comparison to "Breaking Bad," is not far from the truth when you consider that the emmy winning program which recently went off the air after a breathtaking five seasons whose story line had lead actor Bryan Cranston portraying a hapless chemist fellow who rose to fame, fortune, mayhem and murder by becoming the premier Meth producer in all of the Southwest, when all he intended to do was to earn some extra dough to pay for cancer treatment and get a little security for his family.
You may think the comparison between the shutdown of the government, and the fallout which has resulted is a reach, but wait, isn't New Mexico, the location of that program, not too far from Texas?
The home of that guy, Sen. Ted Cruz, yet another serial politician.
He of the slicked back hair, the lizard eyed smile, whose most recent appearance on CNN with a lengthy interview with Candy Crowley, one of the network's premier psychic probers showed us once and for all that this guy is indeed dangerous.
And though he was born in Canada, he's a U. S. Senator from Texas. The land of the free - range politicians,, the home of the real bad boys of politics.
And just like the lead character in that mesmerizing cable television show, "Breaking Bad," Cruz has all the signs of yet another politically ambitious guy whose only guiding principle is personal ambition and rising to a position in the government where he can wreak real havoc.
Make that has already wrought havoc.
Indeed, Mr. Cruz and his small merry band of rogue Republican legislators have not only brought the country to the brink of financial disaster, but left that other guy, Speakier of the House, Rep. John Boehner facing flanks of TV cameras everyday, staring into space, mumbling about whose not on third, and looking for all the world like he is sitting atop a dead skunk.
And make no mistake, all of those guys - politicians and media alike - inside the beltway are making more political coin of the realm with all of this strife playing out over the air waves and into the newspapers and onto the internet which is only encouraging them in their climb up that ladder to their fifteen minutes of fame.
And here, in Tampa, the brunt of all of these political monkeyshines and threatened deadlines, is taking a toll already.
Civilian workers are going back to MacDill AFB, after a few shaky days of furlough. That furlough for workers who support a facility which not only employs hundreds of Tampa residents, but is also the home of CENTCOM, the nerve center and commanding office of every military operation the United States is presently involved, including anti-terrorist and covert operations.
Shutdown, Debt Ceiling, Affordable Care Act, all of that makes little or no sense to an average person living in Tampa who is just trying to make a living.
She works at a Marathon gas station and convenience store up on Kennedy Blvd. The place is usually buzzing on an average morning but his morning..not so busy.
"People are scared to spend money, " she says shaking her head. "It's getting to them."
And over in West Tampa, a small bodega near Main and Howard is quiet, and a coffee pot sits full.
"Nobody's buying today," says the owner, "Today, I only made three sandwiches, usually, by this time, at least twelve or more. It's those guys in Washington, they're hurting everyone."
That's right. Scaring and fear mongering and affecting the lives of everyday people who work for a living everyday, and didn't have a prayer for insurance before the Affordable Care Act.
Or who don't work for a living because of being either retired or on disability.
And these residents of Tampa who are already being affected by this monstrosity, this shutdown, and the possible default to come are probably not aware that just today the governments of China and Japan - our biggest loan meisters - have issued subtle but firm warning that all of this nonsense is endangering the entire planet.
Nor are they aware that up there in Washington, their own elected officials are essentially selling them out by refusing to stand up to the latest bully on the block.
Well, ok, other people are suffering too...not just in Tampa.
For instance, back up there in Washington, the people in the Congress and the Senate who are allowed to eat in the White House Mess have to put up with the fact that for the eighth straight day, the soup of the day is going to have to be turkey chili.
