Cliff Dukes and Huey Whittaker were two big reasons why the Tampa Bay Storm was able to defeat the New Orleans VooDoo 46-40 in their season opener last Friday. Dukes finished with four of the Storm’s six sacks and Whittaker led all Storm receivers with 10 catches.
For their outstanding play, both players earned weekly honors in Week One of the 2011 AFL season.
Cliff Dukes was named the Russell Athletic Defensive Player of the week by virtue of his franchise single-game record four sacks, five tackles and a safety in the win. Other candidates included: Philadelphia’s Tanner Varner, San Jose’s Dwight McLean, Dallas’ Chris LeFlore, Arizona’s Vince Hill, and Chicago’s Jason Simpson.
Huey Whittaker earned the JLS Ironman of the Week for his 10 receptions for 80 yards, the sixth-highest reception total in the league. Despite not scoring via a passing touchdown, Whittaker’s presence was felt not only offensively but on the defensive side as well as he recorded 2.5 tackles on defense after filling in at linebacker after an injury to Eric Ortiz. Other candidates included: Pittsburgh’s Joshua Rue, San Jose’s Rodney Wright, Arizona’s Jason Geathers and Milwaukee’s Marcus Everett.
Game two of the 2011 is Thursday, March 17th with the Storm (1-0) traveling to Utah to take on the Blaze (0-0) at Energy Solutions Arena. Game time is 9:00 PM EST and can be heard on 1250 AM-WHNZ with Jack Harris and Chris Garrido calling the action.
