The Tampa Bay Lightning announced Monday that Martin St. Louis will serve as their new team captain. The 38-year-old forward will replace Vincent Lecavalier, who was bought out by the team this past summer.
“Marty embodies everything a captain should be,” said head coach Jon Cooper. “The captaincy is one of the highest honors in hockey and Marty is well-deserving. We have a great group of leaders on this team and I’m sure Marty will receive plenty of support moving forward.”
The team also announced that forwards Nate Thompson and Steven Stamkos, as well as defenseman Matt Carle will serve as assistant captains.
Undrafted out of the University of Vermont, the 5-8 St. Louis has gone on to have quite the accomplished NHL career. After a brief stint with the Calgary Flames, St. Louis joined the Lightning in 2000. St. Louis now stands as the franchise’s all-time leader in assists (556), points (892) and shorthanded goals (28). He ranks second in goals (336) and games played (910).
The 38-year-old winger does not show any signs of slowing down either.
St. Louis led the league in scoring last season, with 60 in 48 games. He is the only player remaining from Tampa’s Stanley Cup winning team in 2004. He is a six-time all-star and a three-time winner of the Lady Byng Trophy for sportsmanship.
