The Tampa Bay Krewe the Naples Hammerheads each won away games on Saturday, Feb.16, to remain unbeaten in crossover action. The Krewe beat the Miami Tridents, while the Hammerheads defeated the Daytona Beach Coconuts. However, the Orlando Griffins suffered an unexpected defeat at the hands of the Fort Lauderdale Knights.
Tampa Bay beats Miami Tridents
The Tampa Bay Krewe (8-1-1), remained the top team in northern Florida after beating the Miami Tridents (4-6-0) by a score of 23 to 19 Saturday afternoon. The Krewe traveled from Tampa Bay to play the Tridents on their home pitch at Ben Franklin Park in Miami, Fla.
The match was close, as both clubs reached the try zone three times. However, penalty kicks gave the edge to the Krewe. In the game, Tampa Bay scored three tries, one conversion, and two penalty kicks to earn 23 points, while Miami relied on three tries and two conversions for a total of 19 points.
After both clubs take a break for the 37th Annual Ruggerfest in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. this coming weekend, Tampa Bay will host the Boca Raton Buccaneers (7-2-0) at Cuscaden Park on Saturday, March 2. Meanwhile, the Miami Tridents will enjoy a bye weekend to begin the month of March.
Naples defeats Daytona Beach
The Naples Hammerheads (9-1-0), led by veteran Coach Bryan Vince, defeated the Daytona Beach Coconuts (3-7-0) by a score of 30 to 25 Saturday afternoon. The Coconuts hosted the Hammerheads at Richard Petty Field in Daytona Beach, Fla. With this win, Naples remains the top team in southern Florida.
In the match, the Hammerheads scored four tries, two conversions, and two penalty kicks to earn their 30 points. The Coconuts kept it close with four tries of their own, but were limited to one conversion and one penalty kick as they scored a total of 25 points.
After taking a break from regular play for Ruggerfest next weekend, the Hammerheads will host the Orlando Griffins, while the Coconuts welcome the Fort Lauderdale Knights to Daytona Beach.
Orlando upset by Fort Lauderdale
The Orlando Griffins (6-3-1) suffered a 26 to 19 upset at the hands of the Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Knights (3-6-0) Saturday afternoon. The Knights hosted the match at Mills Pond Park, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
According to Orlando Griffins JD Flynn and Jason Hamilton, Orlando led Fort Lauderdale 19 to 0 at the half, but came out flat in the second half. The Knights scored four tries and three conversions, all in the second half. The Griffins scored three tries and two conversions, all in the first half.
The Griffins will travel to Naples on Saturday, March 2 to take on the Hammerheads, while the Knights head northward to play the Daytona Beach Coconuts.
Division III matches on Saturday
In Division III play on Saturday, the Palm Beach Panthers (5-0) defeated the Treasure Coast Pirates (0-6) by a score of 59 to 10 in West Palm Beach, Fla. Meanwhile, the Gainesville Hogs (5-1) avenged their early season loss to the Brevard Old Red Eyes (5-2) with a 22 to 7 victory over Brevard at the Gainesville Rugby Club.
