The Tampa Bay Krewe, after winning a last minute appeal Tuesday night, and the Naples Hammerheads claim the top seeds in Florida as rugby clubs across the state prepare to play crossover matches. The crossover portion of the 2012-2013 FRU Division II Rugby Season kicks off this Saturday, Feb. 9.
Tampa Bay wins appeal Tuesday night to take back the top seed
On Tuesday night, Feb. 5, the Tampa Bay Krewe won its appeal to USA Rugby South regarding the results of the controversial overtime match against the Orlando Griffins on Nov. 3. Originally, Orlando appeared to defeat the Krewe 31 to 24 in overtime.
However, overtime periods in regular season matches violates rules of play. Though the clubs cannot agree why the match went into extra play, the point is now moot, as the final official score for the match will forever be Krewe 24 to Griffins 24. Therefore, Tampa Bay takes back the top seed in the Northern Division of the Florida Rugby Union (FRU).
Meanwhile, the Naples Hammerheads captured the top slot in the south the last weekend in January with its defeat of the Miami Tridents. Unlike the situation in the north, Naples defeated Boca Raton twice in regulation-only games, which prevented the drama in the north from spreading to the Southern Division of the FRU.
The who, the what, and the where for this weekend’s crossover matches
The Tampa Bay Krewe will host the Fort Lauderdale Knights this Saturday afternoon. The clubs will meet to play the match on the Krewe’s home pitch at Cuscaden Park. The address is 2900 North 15th Street, Tampa, Fla. 33605. The match kicks off at 2 p.m.
The Orlando Griffins are hosting the Miami Tridents this Saturday afternoon. This match will take place on Thunder Field in Orlando. The address for the pitch is One Citrus Bowl Place, Orlando, Fla. 32805. The game will kick off at 2 p.m.
The Boca Raton Buccaneers will host the Daytona Beach Coconuts Saturday afternoon. The clubs will play this match on the Buccaneers home pitch at Don Estridge Middle School. The address for the game is 1798 Northwest Spanish River Blvd, Boca Raton, Fla. 33431.
Due to last minute changes in the schedule, the Naples Hammerheads have a bye weekend this Saturday. However, the club is working to get together a scrimmage that will keep it prepared as their crossover season begins next Saturday.
