Nashville has a weekend of fabulous weather to look forward to, and no matter what you decide to tackle while it’s sunny… ending Saturday night with some music would be ideal, wouldn’t it? Head to the Gulch, where local folk-rockers Tammy Rochelle and Mackenzie Scott will be playing an intimate show at Casablanca Coffee.
Tammy Rochelle grew up in North Carolina. When she was only 4 years old, her parents took her to see the classic doo-wop group Dion and the Belmonts – and Rochelle was absolutely captivated. She knew from that time forward that she wanted to be a musician. By the time she was in college, she had already written a lot of poetry. But she had never written any songs. Her friends gave her a guitar and pushed her to put her poetry to music. She played her first show of original tunes only a week later, and was surprised to find that she felt more comfortable on stage than anywhere else.
After that, Rochelle transferred to Belmont. She would play a bit around town while she was still in school, and did a few recordings at Belmont’s studios. In the summer of 2000, she went to the World’s Fair in Germany as a volunteer with the YMCA. When one of the scheduled bands cancelled at the last minute, Tammy Rochelle grabbed her guitar and convinced the organizers to let her fill in. They liked her so much that they encouraged her to come back to Germany with a full band. She did, and they stayed and played gigs there for four months.
The experience led to many contacts all over Europe, and normally Rochelle plays in music festivals there every summer. But last year she was recording a new album, Liberty Spoke to Me, and stayed in Nashville to work on it. While she’s proud of the results – and thinks the album is her most mature to date – she’s eager to travel again! Rochelle will be playing some international shows this year, so be sure to catch her this weekend while she’s still in town.
