Talladega tango: Good day goes bad for Busch

With 49 laps to go in the Aaron’s 499 at Talladega Superspeedway, Joe Gibbs Racing drivers Kyle Busch and Joey Logano were picking up where they left off in Saturday’s Nationwide Series race, drafting at the front of the pack. That’s where things went wrong.

Logano gave Busch a bad push in the draft that sent him into Matt Kenseth in turn 3. Busch’s #18 M&Ms Pretzel Toyota Camry wouldn’t be in as good a shape as his Nationwide car on Saturday, and Busch went on to finish 35th in Sunday’s race. Around the same time, Denny Hamlin in the #11 FedEx Office Toyota scraped the wall; the car sustained minimal damage, and Hamlin came back to a 23rd-place finish.

Logano had the best luck of the day for JGR, coming home in 10th in the #20 Home Depot Toyota.  Jimmie Johnson won the race over Clint Bowyer, tying the closest margin of victory – 0.002-second – in a Sprint Cup race.

His 10th-place finish moved Logano up four spots in the point standings, from 28th to 24th. Hamlin was able to gain three spots, moving to 17th, while Busch dropped back to 6th from 2nd.
