Talking demons and Possession with author Devyn Quinn

Possession by Devyn Quinn releases Aug. 2009

Today I am interviewing goth-erotic author, Devyn Quinn.

Thank you for joining me today. Please tell me about your book, POSSESSION?

DQ: I proposed Possession to Kennsington Books editor, Hilary Sares, as a series revolving around a book penned by the Devil, one containing all the secrets of Hell itself. The premise behind the series. The book, the Delomelanicon, would be passed from owner to owner, and each person taking possession of the book would encounter their own demon, one that would change their perception of body, mind and spirit. The only way to get rid of the demon is to get rid of the book. But it can't be physically destroyed. The book has to be passed to another person, hence the reason it needed to be a series… <G>

What was your inspiration for your amazing characters?

DQ: The actual inspiration was Johnny Depp's 9th Gate, which got me to thinking: what if Satan wrote his own "bible" and offered the secrets of all his demons to human beings? What would you do if you could summon a demon to answer your will and command...except it's the demon that has the will and command over you? I couldn’t get the idea out of my mind and just knew there was more that could be done with the concepts introduced in the movie.

What was the greatest challenge in writing this book?

DQ: Time was my biggest enemy. It kept getting away from me. Sometimes life just piles up and you can't get to the computer in the way you'd like to. And even though I knew what I wanted to write, the words simply would not come. I was literally word blocked and couldn't seem to get anything done with it. It didn't help that the extensions on my deadline had run out. It reached the point when I could not ask my editor for another month. It came down to a single month, and I had to write the book. I did. Amazingly, it got 4.5 stars from RT, LOL, so I guess I did all right...

Can you tell me what is up next for you?

DQ: I've moved to NAL, where I will be writing a paranormal romance series for their Signet Eclipse imprint. These will be my first book in mass market, and I'm petrified!

Are you working on anything new right now?

DQ: I'm working on the first book of the series I proposed to NAL, which concerns a lost civilization of Mer folk.

What is your favorite “guilty pleasure” when not writing?

DQ: Renting seasons of my favorite shows and just watching hour after hour of television until my eyes are close to falling out. I just love getting the whole season on DVD and doing that marathon, LOL. I'm exhausted at the end of 2-3 days, but I've had fun.

And finally, do you prefer a man to wear boxers or briefs?

DQ: Oh, definitely boxers. Can't stand those tighty-whities, though I have been known to wear men's briefs on occasion when I'm needing some underwear, LOL.
