Tales of the City the musical will enjoy it's world premiere in San Francisco big time, with an opening gala and disco and dates coordinated with the Pride Parade. Who's your Betty? Slideshow at left includes Tony Award winning Betty Buckley, who played Anna Madrigal in the ACT workshop.
Here's the announcement from ACT, noting the creators also created the up-coming Broadway puppet musical "Avenue Q", about a bright-eyed recent graduate trying to make it in New York on a budget that only allows him to live far, far off Broadway. Tell me about it, I'm a bicycle commuter and I live in the tiny 1950s tract home I grew up in in San Leandro and Examiner.com doesn't pay salaries or expenses. Never dreamed my life is a musical in the making, thanks for that. What would that sound like, anybody want to collaborate?
In any event, here are details about the festivities for Tales of the City, which my opera super colleague Paul Ziller has been looking forward to.
ARMISTEAD MAUPIN’S TALES OF THE CITY
EXTENDS THROUGH JULY 3!
Special 7 p.m. performance added for Pride Sunday, June 26.
SAN FRANCISCO, CA, February 7, 2011—American Conservatory Theater’s (A.C.T.) highly anticipated production of Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City is already taking off at the box office. Due to high demand, A.C.T. has added two weeks of performances to the run of the world premiere musical, which will now play through July 3, including a new special 7 p.m. performance on June 26, the evening of the San Francisco Pride Parade. A new preview performance has also been added on Wednesday, May 18, at 8 p.m. Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City will now run May 18–July 3, 2011, at the American Conservatory Theater (415 Geary Street, San Francisco). Performances are Tuesdays–Saturdays, at 8 p.m. (June 7 performance is at 7 p.m.); Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, at 2 p.m. (no matinee performances on May 18, 21, 22, 25, and June 1 and 26); and additional preview performances on two Sundays, May 29 and June 5, at 8 p.m. The press night for the show is Tuesday, May 31, 2011, at 8 p.m. For more information and to purchase tickets, please contact the A.C.T. Box Office at 415.749.2228 or visit the A.C.T. website at www.act-sf.org.
Three decades after Armistead Maupin mesmerized millions with his daily column in the city’s newspapers, detailing the lives and (multiple) loves of Mary Ann, Mouse, Mona, Brian, and their beloved but mysterious landlady, Mrs. Madrigal, his iconic San Francisco saga comes home as a momentous new musical from the Tony Award–winning creators of Avenue Q (librettist Jeff Whitty and director Jason Moore) and the musical minds behind the glam-rock phenomenon Scissor Sisters (composers Jake Shears and John Garden). The capstone of the 2010–11 season, A.C.T.’s world premiere musical adaptation of Tales of the City unleashes an exuberant celebration of the irrepressible spirit that continues to define our City by the Bay. The general public is invited to join Tale Chasers, A.C.T.’s email fan club, to get access to exclusive first looks, presale ticket information, and other special offers by visiting www.act-sf.org/TaleChasers.
A.C.T.’s Opening Night Gala honoring Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City will take place Wednesday, June 1, 2011. Beginning with a black tie cocktail reception and gala dinner in a tented Union Square and followed by the performance and a disco party with the cast and special guests at Ruby Skye, this gala is expected to be the event of the season.
