Taking of the Hill, Federal Hill

It was an Indian summer day in late October. If you didn’t see the leaves changing color you wouldn’t have known that it was October, it was so warm. It was a perfect day to take the hill, Federal Hill. In all my years in Baltimore, and that is many, I had never gone up to the top of Federal Hill so I took the Charm City Food Tours newest tour-Federal Hill.

When Charm City Tours started in Baltimore this past summer, I was quite impressed with the Fells Point Tour. There was a plethora of information I didn’t know about my city and a number of restaurants/bars that I never entered and delectable edibles I hadn’t eaten.

CharmCity Food Tours - Federal Hill kicked off

Celeste Corsaro who runs Charm City Food Tours asked if I wanted to join other media folk to try out the new tour. After enjoying their Fells Point tour, I decided it was time to learn about Federal Hill.

We kicked off at Cross Street Market with a corned beef sandwich at Big Jim’s Deli, and on to the Utz stand where we received a bag of chips in a historic replicated bag.  We moved on through the market and out and around the corner to Abbey Bistro Burger for a yummy slider and house made chips.

A stop, mulled cider and biscotti at Scarborough Fair Bed and Breakfast was very festive. Their rooms are beautiful but I think our favorite bedroom was the Poe.

Onward to filling our tummies and trying a new restaurant we moved over to the Metropolitan Wine and Coffee Bar where we indulged in a Scottish Egg along with a selection of adult beverages.

The interaction with the guide and the other tour takers adds to the overall experience. We didn’t hit all the restaurants on the tour involved but it wasn’t necessary, I think we were all pretty full.  We walked through the neighborhood like little lambs but not to slaughter but to the “hill”, the actual “hill”.

Luckily I didn’t hyperventilate as I thought I would as I climbed Federal Hill. What a glorious view.  It was the perfect day, the park, the view of the harbor and downtown, the mothers with kids in strollers, dogs a tail a wagging for their patch of green and a plethora MICA students painting the view of the harbor: ideal.

We had Berger cookies during the Fells Point tour and on the Federal Hill tour we enjoyed Dangerously Delicious Berger Cookie Pie (Baltimore Bomb) as the finale of the Federal Hill Tour. Do you see a reoccurring theme?

Be sure to check out my slide show of the tour.

The tours aren’t just for out-of-towners, they are informative, fulfilling and filling for the locals as well.

Wow, I never had "corn beef," only CORNED beef. Was there real corn in it?

Is a "burger cookie" some some of rip off of BERGER cookies?? Interesting.
