The first phase of the Washington Metro's long-awaited Silver Line is currently scheduled to begin operation in March of this year. These new stations will provide access to various Northern Virginia locales that have not previously been served by commuter rail, including McLean, Tysons Corner, and Reston.

The Silver Line will branch off from the existing Orange Line at the existing East Falls Church station. East Falls Church is located within easy walking distance of the western ends of the Custis Trail and Four Mile Run Trail, which coincide with the spot where the Washington & Old Dominion Railroad Trail crosses Lee Highway.

The Silver Line will eventually extend all the way to Dulles Airport, but initially its westernmost station will be Wiehle–Reston East. This station will also be within easy reach of a stretch of the W&OD Trail. The community of Reston also boasts its own trail system.
