Let’s face it going to a steak house can be scary if you are trying to stick to a low fat diet or simply make better food choices. There is nothing about a T-Bone, with mashed potatoes and cream of spinach that screams low calorie. But if you are willing to try some other options on the menu you might find that they are so flavorful and heart healthy that you won’t miss the meat.
We have all heard by now that it's a good idea to opt for two servings (3.5 ounces) of fish weekly, preferably the kind that is packed with omega-3 fatty acids. Still unsure? Well fear not because Shula’s Steakhouse wants you to understand that enjoying a steak doesn't only mean consuming red meat...think tuna or salmon steak?

As I walked skeptically into Shula’s Steak House on 43rd Street, I was ensconced in memorabilia of the hall of fame coach Don Shula, but upon reviewing the choices I came across the items listed below (which are available at the other locations), that are a good option for us non-meat eaters and those choosing to eat lighter fare.

For Starters

Hors d'oeuvres can really put a crimp in your diet plans. Pick something that isn't drenched in butter, oil or deep fried.
Good Option- Seared Ahi Tuna Appetizer served with creamy wasabi (328 calories)
Better Option- Blackened Sea Scallop Appetizer served with mango salsa (192 calories)


Greens are a good source of iron as well as essential vitamins. Keep it simple and raw or have your choice steamed.
Good Option- Spinach Salad (483 calories without dressing, 623-815 calories depending on dressing selected). Plus you might not need the dressing because it’s packed with strawberries and dried cranberries.
Better Option- House salad (305 calories) made with hearts of palm is basic and good.

Main Course

Don’t allow your eyes to order for you. Make choices that help you to feel better not bloated. The chimichurri sauce here is spicy and delish while the salsa makes the fish taste even fresher.
Good choice- Salmon Market Fish Special with chimichurri (920 calories)
Better choice- Salmon Market Fish Special with pineapple/mango salsa (626 calories)


Spare yourself the temptation of the decadent chocolate molten lava cake and just order the seasonal berries.
