The islands are calling you, well, at least from only a few miles away. Hula Hands is one of Alaska’s best-value dining establishments serving South Pacific fare, mainly Hawaiian and Polynesian foods. Hula Hands now has two locations in Anchorage, one in Mountain View and the other in the Spenard neighborhood, right off Fireweed Lane.

The best feature of this local Cheap Eats Gem is their generous portions of hot, finger-licking meals for not a lot of dough. Serving lunch and dinner, they have a variety of menu items, ranging from $1.50 to $15.  A sampling of meal items include kalua cabbage, lomi salmon, grilled mahi mahi and kalbi beef ribs.
Average prices for an average meal at Hula Hands ranges from $7 to $10, but with the portion sizes, it’s easy to have enough leftovers to provide a second meal or to share with a dining buddy. You can order “to-go” and also the option of dining in a mom-and-pop diner atmosphere, complete with Hawaiian music, tropical island themed décor and friendly staff.
My favorite is the Pulchu Chicken combo meal for $9.50. This barbeque style chicken is just beyond tasty; I always have a hard time putting my fork down. It’s slightly seared but never burnt, and the salty glaze sets off the moist, meaty chunks served with a scoop of white rice and their famous homemade macaroni salad.
Hula Hands products and service is usually consistent; I have never been disappointed with any of my to-go orders or dining experiences. When ordering for take-out I have found that there’s so much in that to-go box, I never worry about what to take to work the next day for lunch.
This family-owned and Alaskan-owned restaurant has become a local favorite, mainly due to unique menu items such as kim chee, taro leaves and shoyu poke. Not only do they have fair prices, they also conveniently provide catering for large groups and corporate events.
If you haven’t tried South Pacific foods, Hula Hands is a great local eatery to introduce you to the cuisine of the islands. With its homemade side dishes, succulent barbeque meats, and fresh exotic vegetables, this restaurant will prove to be a winner in its category of favorite local restaurants.
