Take time to decompose

This holiday season can leave many of us overwhelmed and in sore need for some solo introspection. Taking time to care for ourselves amidst the demands of parties, gift buying and other festivities can be challenging to say the least. It's easy to let our own concerns go by the wayside, particularly with the arrival of family and friends on a rotational basis. Yet, on a positive note, achieving this can be relatively simple if only we make a commitment to ourselves and set aside this essential me time.

How we care for our own needs does indeed impact our ability to care for those we love. If our own energies become circumcised or adversely affected, our contributions to others and the greater society are then fraught with dysfunction, slackened productivity and quality outcomes. In the long run, taking time for ourselves will indeed serve to facilitate a more memorable holiday season that the entire family will more greatly enjoy. Suffice to say, setting aside appropriate time to reenergize and reinvest in our own health is in no way selfish or to be viewed as a guilty pleasure.

Let's consider here some fruitful options to reestablish our own energies and stamina:

  • Select a time during the day to take a solitary walk. Choose a favorite place in Nature and enjoy the process. Take time to revel in Nature's gifts and experience the beauty all around you.
  • Carve out a niche in the day to journal or explore your own inner sanctuary. When we take a pregnant pause to let ourselves think without distraction, we are better prepared the many challenges facing us throughout the work day and on the home front.
  • Meditate. This intrinsic, essential inclusion is perhaps one of the greatest things anyone can do for themselves. An old Hindi saying insists that we should all take at least one hour to meditate - particularly if we truly feel that we are too busy to take time out for meditation daily. This practice does indeed improve and enhance not only productivity but the quality and quantity of our authentic voice.
  • Drink tea. Sometimes, the simple art of crafting a homemade brew urges us all to slow down, relax and reflect upon our current goals and primary focus. More significantly, this simple ritual is one that has extended across the ages for its ability to engage our hearts, minds and souls both, on a solitary and interactive plateau. When we offer ourselves the respect deserved for celebrating who we are, we thereby gift society and our loved ones with those intrinsic gifts by which we were designed to magnify.
