Hailing from Ohio, Nekrofilth play a mix of thrash and death metal. The band’s debut full-length studio CD is titled Devil’s Breath. Take Five spoke with guitarist/vocalist Zack Rose, who gave the low down on all things dark and dirty.
What led you to form Nekrofilth in 2008? And please explain your musical approach.
Zack Rose: “In February 2008, (bassist and drummer) Timmy (Fiorucci) and I were trying to start a new band with Craigger (Crucified Mortals/ex-NunSlaughter), but he was always late because his ugly girlfriend was giving him a hard time. So we got bored, and (drummer) Ryan was hanging around, too, so we wrote a bunch of riffs and ended up recording a demo tape (this was later re-released on vinyl as Worship Destruction). Things sort of spun out of control after that. No real mindful approach, except to keep things really negative and generally mean-spirited.”
Tell me about your new full-length studio CD, Devil’s Breath, released by Hells Headbangers. What can listeners expect to experience?
Zack Rose: “This is our first full length! Pretty sad, when you consider we have been around for five f*cking years! This album will give you an overwhelming urge to cum on a slice of raw liver, or vomit uncontrollably. OR perhaps just an overwhelming urge to throw it in the garbage! Then you can use the now-empty jewel case for your Skeletonwitch and Mastodon burn copies!”
How would you say your music and lyrics have evolved on Devil’s Breath, as compared with your debut full-length studio CD, 2011’s Worship Destruction?
Zack Rose: “Actually, Worship Destruction is a demo repackaging on vinyl. It shouldn’t be considered a full-length by any means. Also, it was never released on CD. As for changes in music, two-thirds of the band have left and are now homeless. You would think somehow we have improved, but this simply isn’t the case! All we know how to do is Slaughter and Repulsion riffs and hope no one notices. Oh, and we ripped off NME, Celtic Frost, and Impetigo this time, too. Maybe this is part of our evolution. Sadly, our lyrics haven’t evolved at all and are probably even dumber than before!”
Tell me about the track “Deep Inside Disease,” off of Devil’s Breath. What inspired the lyrics? And how did you go about translating them from your brain and onto paper?
Zack Rose: “I can’t really get into this. Please speak with my attorney.”
Any chance of you coming to New Mexico anytime soon? If not, how close do you think you’ll come? If so, when and where?
Zack Rose: “We are playing in Albuquerque the day before Thanksgiving! It will be the last show on our West Coast tour this November. Not sure what venue. Stay tuned for an announcement on that soon!”
