Hailing from places like Washington, Texas, and New Mexico, Albuquerque-based Deviance in Kaos play modern American heavy metal. The band consists of vocalist Jonathan Andujo, bassist Jason Martin, guitarists Sean Cristobal Rael and Brandon Lehnert, and drummer Bullofa Cristix. Take Five made contact with Cristix, who had the following to report about the latest happenings with Deviance in Kaos.
Tell me about your band and its musical approach. Specifically, what would you call your style of metal and how did you come about playing it?
Cristix: “We are a group of five. Some of us have been friends forever and some of us have just become good friends. The two who started Deviance in Kaos are Jonathan Andujo and Jason Serrano, aka Cooter. The addition of Miklo and Hoss (both guitarists) came shortly thereafter. The last member to join the band was me on the drums. Our style ranges from old-school metal to hardcore and a lot in between. We all grew up listening to metal bands, so there’s no shortage of influential entities.”
Any plans to record an EP or full-length studio CD? What are your plans and what can listeners expect to experience with respect to your debut? Provide any details you have at this time.
Cristix: “In regards to a full-length album: We are currently working on a debut album, expecting to release it in the summer of 2013 with a four-song EP to be released in March sometime. Listeners should expect to be blissfully entertained, sonically and visually—just be prepared for ENERGY and KAOS!”
How has living in New Mexico influenced your musical approach?
Cristix: “We have an incredible metal scene, which has helped out, but there’s just that special something in New Mexico that drives the energy—in its people, culture, and the land itself, which in turn permeates into our songs. That’s what we derive from—that energy!”
What can fans expect to experience at one of your live shows? And if you are able, give an upcoming listing of performances.
Cristix: “Our hope is that the fans have an unforgettable experience and one hell of a show! We are currently working on our schedule for the New Year. Our goal at this time is to record the EP and then start booking shows. All the details will be outlined in the very near future, so stay tuned!”
Would you say your band is a democracy, dictatorship, or other? Explain.
Cristix: “It varies from situation to situation, but mostly it’s a democracy. The whole band is included in the process, start to finish. It just works better when all the members are involved in some way. One big happy family over here, and this family is ready to melt some stages! \,,/”
