Formed in early 2007, Shiprock’s Decayed Angel is a one-man band that started off playing deathgrind and progressed into pornogrind. The band is masterminded by Brandon “Bilespewer” Arthur, who handles guitars, vocals, bass, and drum programming. Arthur is joined on stage by support members to create a full-fledged sound. Decayed Angel has numerous CDs available and is currently working on a new release titled There is only Porn. Take Five spoke with Brandon Arthur and obtained some insight into the world of grind.
Tell me how you came to form Decayed Angel and describe the musical evolution of your band.
DA: “Decayed Angel was formed in early 2007. Many attempts were made to have a full band, but those attempts were unsuccessful, so I decided to just skip all the stress to find members who actually wanted to play grind and start out as a one-man band. The demo was recorded/released three months later. Decayed Angel’s early sound was strictly deathgrind on the demo and on Atrocities of the Flesh. With my fascination with pornogrind, I started to add those elements of heaviness and grooves into the music. The following releases were very much rooted in pornogrind, the style of grind Decayed Angel plays today.”
What was it that led Decayed Angel into exploring the world of pornogrind?
DA: “Foremost has to be the music itself. Pornogrind is very heavy and just has those grooves that really get me pumped up. The majority of the songs are short and straight to the point, and the porn samples are just awesome to use.”
Tell me about the CD you are currently working on, the one titled There is only Porn. What can fans expect to hear? And where can listeners score a copy?
DA: “There Is Only Porn is still in the works right now, about 75% complete. This new CD has to be Decayed Angel’s best so far. The songs are nice and groovy, some fast songs and some mid-paced songs, but all-around heavy. As of now we are trying to find a label to release There Is Only Porn. As soon as we get that situated, we will have more information about its availability.”
What do you like best about performing live? What do you like least?
DA: “When we play live, some people are caught off guard when the porn samples we use are being played. The reactions when the samples are playing are great to see: some like it, some dislike it, and some just are thrown off by it. After the samples, we kick into Decayed Angel’s brand of pornogrind. One thing we dislike is being the only grind band on a show’s lineup; it would be great to have more grind bands Decayed Angel could play live with. An all-grind show would be awesome.”
How has living in New Mexico (Shiprock) influenced your musical approach? Where are you based today?
DA: “Not really. Decayed Angel is the only pornogrind band from our area (Four Corners), so there isn’t really much influence in terms of creating pornogrind. Decayed Angel is still based in Shiprock, New Mexico.”
