The easiest way to assure that you will be successful in your career is to do something that you love. It doesn’t matter what you choose, as long as it provides value to other people and you love doing it.
Most people don’t love what they do. Many simply endure their life’s work, hoping that the weekend comes sooner rather than later. You can see it in their eyes and hear it in what they say about their jobs.
If you choose to strike out on your own, be prepared for admonitions from well-meaning friends and loved ones. Lately, the national news media has also gotten into the game. Risk taking is simply too dangerous, they remind recent graduates, in these turbulent financial times. Do something safe. Settle.
Ironically, there’s never been a better time to take a risk on yourself than right now. You have very little to lose and everything to gain. High paying jobs are hard to come by. Why not invest in yourself by doing what you truly love, instead?
A funny thing happens when you pursue your professional passion. You rise above the competition and succeed. It’s virtually guaranteed. You show up earlier and stay later, not because you have to but because you want to. You become better at what you do because you love doing it and want to succeed.
That’s not to say that it will easy. It won’t be, but at least you’ll enjoy our work. You may not become wealthy at it either, but take a look at the people who took the safe and easy way out. Chances are, they aren’t wealthy, either.
When you do what you love, career success comes easier than it would otherwise. Make a promise to yourself that from this point forward, you’re going to pursue your professional passion. It’s the first step to becoming successful beyond your wildest dreams.
