Take an Ayurvedic approach to weight loss for health and happiness, says Chopra

Deepak Chopra, M.D., wants to offer the world a different way to shed weight. A believer in natural and holistic health, Chopra has crafted his own weight loss diet that includes Ayurveda guidelines and a unique approach to clean eating in his book "What Are You Hungry For?: The Chopra Solution to Permanent Weight Loss, Well-Being, and Lightness of Soul" (click for details).

Discussing his new research and insights on weight loss in an interview with the Huffington Post, Deepak says it's time for dieters to take back the joy that's available from eating good foods.

"Energy is about more than fueling your body—a higher kind of energy comes from the joy of eating," he says in his book. Ask yourself these questions: Am I in a good mood? Is this meal going to be a positive experience? Is the food attractive and appealing? Can I devote my full attention to enjoying myself? Answering yes means that you can get the most joy and energy from your food.

Use the power of Ayurveda to fuel your weight loss and health by including six tastes in every meal: sweet, sour, salty and bitter, as well as the less-common pungent and stringent. This combination provides you with a feeling of satisfaction and proper nutrition.

How to cope with cravings: Understand what they mean.

"Cravings mean that my body wants to be satisfied. I will give it what it wants by tuning in and listening. I'd like to be fulfilled, and food isn't the only way to get there. The happier I make myself, the less I will use food as a crutch," he explains.
