This past October, just before Halloween, a 20-year-old Oakland University student fought for her life after sustaining injuries from a multi-car accident on Rochester Road, downstate.

Undaunted by challenges, the student, Hailey Brouillet, was one of the first students to take advantage of the study abroad program offered at Oakland University and spent part of last summer studying health care systems in Amsterdam and London.

Her family, friends, and fellow students and teachers, knew her as the girl to take on an adventure; after all, “Why not?” Hailey’s favorite saying.

Her boyfriend, Dominic Gaudino, recalled Hailey’s strong belief that students should take the opportunity to participate in the study abroad program and not think about how costly it might be – there’s always a way. Hailey always said, ‘just go for it.’ For Hailey, studying abroad was the best experience of her life and she wouldn’t take it back for anything.

Hailey was active on campus, volunteering for the CIEE – Council on International Educational Exchange program, and bringing extra mittens to games, in case anyone needed a pair – she was just that kind of young woman.

“She always had a vision of what she wanted to do. She worked it out by herself and went her own way. Why not?”

Remembering Hailey and moving past the lost, the Brouillet family and friends have spearheaded an effort to establish a $25,000 endowment to fund a scholarship for the CIEE Study Abroad program at Oakland University called ‘Share Her Spirit.’ Hailey’s family and boyfriend want to honor the woman she was, and wants the Oakland University community to remember her.

So far, the family has raised $3,800 through the ‘Share Her Spirit’ 5K run at Michigan State University in April that Gaudino spearheaded. There was a fundraiser at Granite City Food and Brewery, June 18th, where a portion of the proceeds benefited the scholarship fund.

“This is our new normal,” Gaudino said, “Either it breaks you down or builds you up. ‘Share Her Spirit’ is building it up.”

Here’s to a great cause – remembering & studying abroad. If you would like to get involved in this project, here are some upcoming events to do so.

The 2014 Hailey Brouillet Study abroad Scholarship Fund Golf Outing will be held at Devil’s Ridge Golf Club in Oxford, Michigan, July 28th. Registration for the event starts at 7:30 am. The cost is $110 per person or $400 for four people. There is a $35 cost for dinner following the outing, and $150 hole sponsorships are available. The event will include a silent auction.

A ‘Share Her Spirit’ Run/Walk 5k event will be held at Boulan Park, on Northfield Parkway, south of Wattles at 1 pm, August 10th. Registration begins at 11 am. The event is free, and all donations will go toward the Hailey Brouillet Study Abroad Scholarship Fund. Food and drinks will be provided for participants, there will be a DJ, and sponsorships are available. Donations of coupons and/or special offers, bottles of water, food, and balloons for the finish line are being accepted.
