There’s no doubt that the fall “shoulder” travel season can bring great savings for the budget-conscious traveler. Jeanenne Tornatore, senior travel editor at Orbitz.com, spoke with Fox 43 about some of the best deals on the books right now. Tornatore recommends checking out three options for the biggest savings: Mountain destinations, beach destinations and cruises. Depending on your specific requirements, you could save up to 70% from the high-season costs.
Snow is coming to mountain destinations soon. Areas like Big Bear Lake have already started prepping their ski/snow areas for the upcoming season, but you can find great rental deals to enjoy your long weekends before the snow actually hits. Plus, you don’t yet need chains for your tires. Tornatore points to Aspen, Vale and Lake Tahoe, among others for savings of nearly 60%. So, if you have a long weekend coming up, and are looking for nature and tranquility, keep those destinations in mind.
Cruises are also very popular right now. There are so many specialty options available that it’s easy to find trips that appeal to the entire family (or group of friends). Tornatore points out that you can save over 50% now versus the high-travel season. Unfortunately, in the Caribbean, you do have hurricane season to contend with, but insurance will help give you peace of mind. Singles, do keep in mind that cruises often tack on single supplements for staterooms. If you don’t pay attention to that supplemental fee, you could end up losing the savings benefits. Be sure to read the fine print!
Tornatore’s finale recommendation is to head for beach destinations. Gone are the throngs of suntanners and summer vacationers, but the weather in places like Southern California, Miami Beach and the Caribbean (among other places) continues to be welcoming to beach goers. Like the cruises, some of these destinations risk hurricane-related delays and cancellations. Again, travel insurance will help off-set those financial risks, should you have to face that threat.
