It seems like it’s happening all the time these days. People are changing careers. All generations alike are going back to school for more or new education. New professionals are going into fields that are unrelated to their majors. Of course, there are also people retiring.
Lee Miller from the Star Ledger just wrote a post about the trend of lawyers switching careers. If it helps, just look at Hollywood and sports entertainment. Just in the past seven days, Jersey Shore’s star Deena Cortese and Chicago Bears’ linebacker Brian Urlacher made it into the media for their career transitions.
Cortese claimed that she is taking charge of her career by moving into the singing realm of Hollywood. Urlacher said that Russell Wilson ended his career because he popped his hamstring trying to chase or tackle Wilson.
No matter what the reason, everyone needs to take accountability for his or her career choices. Whether she succeeds or not, at least Cortese is taking charge of her career decisions.
However, one of the most successful linebackers in this decade retires and blames it on someone else. It doesn’t discount all the great things that he has accomplished but from an accountability standpoint, it just was not appropriate.
Blaming others for what happens to someone’s career is only going to prolong the process of healing and moving onto bigger and better things. Advice to professionals in any field would be that if a job is not a good fit, figure it out early and move on voluntarily so that you don’t blame someone else later down the road for firing you or laying you off.
If everyone stops focusing on what happened to them or what others did to them, they can focus on what they can do for themselves and how they can become successful.
