Take a Silver Screen Staycation in Atlanta

See also

Ever since its inception in the late 1800’s, the cinema has proven an escape for countless people the world-over. Larger than life images projected on a big screen have not only served as the focus of family outings and date nights for decades, but also as much-needed distractions from the harsh realities of the world comprised of stock market crashes and war. A trip to the movies can transport the viewer to far-away countries or utterly fantastic worlds within a matter of minutes – so why wouldn’t one want to make the silver screen central to a staycation? This is particularly true for Atlantans thanks to one of the loveliest and most historic theaters in the United States located in the heart of Midtown. First opened as a lavish movie palace in 1929, the Fox Theatre now serves as the showplace for performances by the Atlanta Ballet and national touring companies that bring Broadway productions to Atlanta. Still true to its roots, the Fox Theatre also plays host to the Coca-Cola Summer Film Festival.

For 2014, the combination of lineup and location will send ticket holders on a sentimental journey. With so many world-class Atlanta restaurants and hotels within a short walk or drive of the theatre, it’s simple to plan a silver screen staycation around the Coca-Cola Summer Film Festival at the Fox Theatre. For instance, just across the street lies the lovely Georgian Terrace Hotel – a supporting sponsor of the theatre, which also houses the highly touted Livingston Restaurant + Bar. Sponsored by The Coca-Cola Company and Delta Airlines, this year’s Summer Film Festival will feature a jam-packed calendar beginning in June. In addition to the movies, visitors may opt to enhance their evening by purchasing a pass to the movie tour. Prior to the evening’s screening, movie tour attendees will be treated to guided tours through the projection booth, screening room, celebrity dressing rooms, and the iconic Fox Theatre stage while learning all about the history of movie palaces.
