With summer behind us, you may have noticed the pleasant drop in temperature. Like bears waking from hibernation during the winter, our young ones have started to venture outside after the long hot brutal summer of Texas. One great activity for your cubs is the annual International Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day at Rowlett Creek Preserve and River Legacy. Wheels start rolling at both locations at 9 a.m. and finish at noon.

Load up the car and motor out to Rowlett Creek Preserve in Garland. This will be a great opportunity for children of all ages and skill levels to get in the saddle and learn some fundamental. By learning some mountain biking techniques such as riding better lines, riding smart and safely, this will help develop their confidence and lead to more fun

More centrally located to all of the Metroplex, is the event in Arlington at River Legacy. The ride will be lead by River Legacy Rats and North Texas Mountain Bike Patrol will sweep for stragglers. This event appears to be more informal with very little instruction unless you ask.

Even if you can’t get out to Rowlett Creek Preserve or River Legacy this weekend still find time to go cycling with kids. Be it around the block or around White Rock Lake riding with you children is fun activity for everyone.
International Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day, like many other inspiring events have their roots in tragedy. It first started out to honor 20 year old cyclist Jack Doub of North Carolina who died of complications from a cycling accident. (TheWeekinCongress.com)

Congressman Richard Burr from North Carolina understood Jack’s passion when he proclaimed, "Jack Doub saw the need for kids to get off the couch, get outside, and get some exercise. I urge my colleagues to support this legislation." (CAMBA) October 5, 2005 Congress voted to pass the resolution officially declaring the first Saturday in October, National Take a Kid Mountain Biking. At the same time International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) was working to make it an international day to honor Jack Doub.

A few parting words: remember Jack Doub, take a kid for a bike ride, please wear a helmet and subscribe to Dallas Mountain Biking for your latest mountain biking news.

Thor Smith has been cycling in the Dallas/ Fort Worth area for nearly a decade now with his 16-year-old, completely rigid Specialized Rockhopper. He often hears from the others riders how brave he is to ride the trails with that bike. Some would take it as a back handed compliment, he just...
