This seems an ideal time to begin planning your vacation for this year. And for those of you here in Los Angeles, a nice, balmy vacation to Hawaii could be just what you're needing.
But, there's more you can add to this year's vacation. If you are able to take your vacation around the weekend of May 17 to 19, you can experience the ultimate in cultural immersion via the 6th Annual International Waikiki Hula Conference. It also pays tribute to the Merrie Monarch Festival in its Fiftieth anniversary.
This Waikiki Hula Conference is open to all levels of experience for dancers with an interest in hula. The three day conference will feature over 80 workshop classes in song (mele) and hula. Cultural crafts will also be taught along with educational seminars conducted by Kumu hula and cultural experts.
The Merrie Monarch, King David Kalakaua, was the ruler who opened the sacred dance of the hula to everyone during his reign, and the Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo, every year pays homage to the dance. The Waikiki Hula Conference will do likewise in this, its 6th Annual presentation.
Conference attendees will also be presented with opportunities to perform their hula learned at the conference workshops at various ho'ike (shows) in Waikiki. They will also participate in opening ceremonies and the closing "Kanikapila" performance.
So, give it some thought, and check out www.waikikihulaconference.com for some registration information. Cost is $385 for the full weekend ($250 for kama'aina-Hawaii residents). Marnie Weeks is the producer of this year's conference.
Wiki, wiki for your 6th Annual Waikiki Hula Conference vacation, May 17, 18 and 19.
