Walking is one of the easiest and best forms of exercise and the Sacramento area is a great place for it, with its multitude of tree-lined streets, parks, and river trails. If you are new to fitness or a seasoned workout buff looking to break up your routine, the “Take A Hike” program through the California State Parks has great ideas to walk the trails, get fit, and experience the great outdoors. There is still plenty of beautiful fall weather to take advantage of and walking is a great way to enjoy everything our area has to offer.
Did you know that walking is the single most effective form of exercise to achieve heart health? Just 30 minutes of brisk walking, at least five days a week, can lower your risk for heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. It is also a great way to lose weight and manage stress. If you are new to exercise, it’s always best to check with your doctor before starting any program. But brisk walking, done at a pace of 14 to 20 minutes per mile, is relatively safe and is a moderate pace for most people.
In addition to the health benefits, walking is also inexpensive, kid-friendly, and you can do it in a variety of places. Most Sacramento residents know about the parks and river trails, but there are also some great places to walk right in the middle of the city. “Take A Hike” offers 10 city walks all rated as “easy”, meaning low miles and easy terrain, in areas such as Sutter’s Fort, Old Sacramento, and the Downtown Plaza. Always remember to enjoy your walk safely by walking in groups, wearing light-colored clothing, and carrying identification and a cell phone. And of course, don’t forget to wear sunscreen and drink plenty of water.
Walking is a simple, effective, and rewarding way to increase your activity level. And when the Sacramento rains start, take your walking indoors at one of the area’s many malls or museums. So, what are you waiting for – take a hike Sacramento!
