Lowers (Lower Trestles) produced more highs than lows this year at the Hurley Pro.

The Finals resembled “surf du soleil.” It was an all-Aussie, aerial, acrobatics Final featuring Taj Burrow and Julian Wilson. Wilson produced high-flying airs while wearing bright neon attire, making his vertical look like ribbon flashing against the backdrop of waves and sky. His talent propelled him into the Finals at the Hurley Pro. However, it would be the more experienced gravity defier from Oz, Taj Burrow, lifting his way to new heights. In previous years, Burrow placed second. This year, Taj Burrow landed his first victory at Lowers.

In other Aussie news, after racking up points at the Hurley Pro, Mick Fanning is now ranked number one on the WCT. Despite being defeated by Travis Logie at this event, Fanning fills the overall position. San Clemente’s own Patrick Gudauskas did not disappoint the hometown crowd when he bested Kelly Slater in Round 3 to qualify for the Quarterfinals. This year, Jordy Smith was the man to keep under surveillance. Not only did he make it through to the Semis at the Hurley Pro, but Smith is currently occupying third place in the WCT rankings. Until now, Smith managed to sneak past media outlets. Smith (South African sleeper agent in the sport of surfing) will not fly low on the radar for much longer, ruining his cover by informing news outlets that he was “frothing for France.”
