Well, it’s official! Chicago’s homeless pets will have a better chance of locating their forever loving homes thanks to a new pet adoption center that is opening in the PetSmart® store in the South Loop of Chicago at 1101 South Canal Street on Sunday, October 20th!
PetSmart Charities and The Anti-Cruelty Society (TACS) have teamed up to open this center inside the PetSmart store at 1101 South Canal St. The center aims to save more than 1,000 pets each year. In fact, PetSmart Charities has helped save the lives of more than 45,000 pets over a three year span of time by opening similar adoption centers in 11 states. What a magnificent feat indeed!
The new cat and dog everyday adoption center was developed to provide pets with a friendly place to live while they wait for their adopters. It will also free up kennel space at The Anti-Cruelty Society’s main shelter. PetSmart Charities estimates the center will adopt out about 20 pets each week.
“This center will be a place of joy, both for families who adopt and the deserving pets who will find their forever homes,” said Dr. Robyn Barbiers, president of The Anti-Cruelty Society. “We’re excited to see how this center will change lives and our community for the better.”
PetSmart Charities is naming the center after the Philip L. Francis family. A Chicago-area native, Francis is the former executive chairman and CEO of PetSmart and served as chairperson of the PetSmart Charities board of directors. A strong pet adoption advocate, Francis adopted his dog, Bit O’ Honey, from a shelter more than 15 years ago.
“We hope Phil’s adoption story and amazing generosity inspires more Chicagoans to give shelter pets a chance,” said Jan Wilkins, Executive Director of PetSmart Charities, Inc.
The facility will be able to house up to 42 dogs, cats, puppies and kittens. The space is 2,075 square feet and will be open seven days each week during the store’s normal operating hours.
