When a Pagan thinks of a Mother he or she will typically think of the Great Mother or other Mother Goddesses such as Gaia. Mother is a word of comfort and support but also one of protection and sometimes of discipline as well. These views of what a mother is makes it hard to believe that a mother would leave her infant with her troubled teen son so that she could go smoke crack, but that is exactly what a mother in the Tacoma area did. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013 the 40 year old Mother was charged with criminal mistreatment.
The Pierce County prosecutors say that Robin Ross had left her 9 month old baby and her 2 year old toddler with their 14 year old brother on Nov. 30, 2012 while she went to another location to smoke crack. The 14 year old brother assaulted the infant while the mother was away. When Robin returned home she found the baby unresponsive and she called 911.
When police interviewed the teen boy he told them that he was jealous of the baby and didn’t like him. The baby spit up on him and angered him. He then admitted to hitting the baby with a rubber ball, a pillow and that he violently shook the baby. At the hospital the emergency doctors found that the baby had suffered severe head trauma. The trauma was so severe that it left the child with 80 percent of its brain dead and not likely to survive the injuries. The teen stated that he knew that he had hurt the baby but didn’t call 911 because he was afraid that he would be in trouble.
Both Robin and her teen son have a history of anger and violence. A few weeks before the teen injured the infant he had held a knife to another siblings neck. That sibling told police that the teen had punched, chocked and hit him with a bat in the past. Police say that Robin knew about the incidents and choose to leave the baby in his care anyway. The teen has been charged with first degree assault.
In knowing the definition of what a mother is in a Pagan sense, it seems so unimaginable that a mother could knowingly leave her child with a person known for violence towards her children while preferring her drug addiction over the care of her child. Even in looking at this from the view of other faiths such as Catholic who often refer to the Virgin Mary as Mother Mary, their thoughts on what a mother is and how one acts in relation to the protection and care of their child is also clear.
