If a picture is worth a thousand words, a picture with statistics is worth more right, San Francisco?
Refer to the slideshow for the charts relating to these studies.
The Pew Research study in the slideshow shows gadget ownership amongst Americans for 2010. Cell phones are already a ubiquitous tool so the fact that they top the list won't surprise most. The surprise may come from how small the percentage is for those that own an eBook Reader or Tablet Computer.
Smartphones seem like they're everywhere these days. In 2009, they accounted for 14% of total mobile phone sales worldwide. Fast forward a few years to 2013 and smartphone sales worldwide are predicted to rise to a whopping 38%. This is pure speculation, but I feel like many of those sales will come from the rising middle class in China and India more than anywhere else.
The meteoric rise of tablet computers is nothing short of astounding. Apple used the iPad to create a new need and the overall industry followed suit to nurture it with a veritable explosion of choices. IDC predicts that these tablets will continue to sell very well and should reach nearly 60 million sales worldwide by 2014. Roughly 20 million of those tablet sales will be in the U.S. alone.
