After being swept by the Daytona Cubs in their latest home stand, the T-Yanks began a four game series against the Clearwater Threshers on Monday night at Bright House Networks Field with Jairo Heredia (ERA 2.88) taking the start.
The T-Yanks got on the board first when Peter O’Brien grounded into a forced out with bases loaded sending two runs home. With a 2-0 lead Heredia allowed a RBI triple and a two run homerun by the Threshers for a 3-2 ballgame. In the 3rd the T-Yanks were able to once again take the lead as Robert Refsnyder hit a RBI double for a tied game and the a sac fly by O’Brien gave Tampa the 4-3 lead. But, the Threshers tied the game once again, this time 5-4.
The game of “cat and mouse” continued as Clearwater tied the game at 5 in the bottom of the 5th inning. Heredia pitched 5 innings allowing 6 hits and 5 runs, striking out 3 batters.
Newcomer Zach Varce (ERA 0.00) then entered the game in his first appearance of 2013. Varce is making a comeback after having Tommy John Surgery in the beginning of the 2012 season. But, it was the top of the 9th that was the T-Yanks last chance at a comeback. Taylor Dugas started the inning with a single that was then followed by a walk by Refsnyder. A walk by Peter O’Brien then loaded the bases. Dan Fiorito grounded into a forced out that loaded the bases again but left Dugas out at home. A sac fly by Jose Toussen then put one run on the board as Refsnyder scored. Saxon Butler’s two run double then made it a 8-5 ballgame as the T-Yanks clinched the victory. Alex Smith’s (ERA 4.60) earned his first win (1-2) after 2 innings of no hit ball with two strikeouts.
The Tampa Yankees will now take on the Clearwater Threshers on Tuesday night at 7:00pm at Bright House Networks Field.
