T-Mobile USA opens iPhone 5 pre-orders

T-Mobile USA opened up online pre-orders for the iPhone 5 on Friday. While the carrier has boasted over that it has over a million jailbroken and unlocked iPhones on its network, this is the first time that America's fourth-largest carrier is selling the device.

Prices begin -- remember that T-Mobile is doing away with traditional contracts and carrier subsidies -- at $99.99 for a 16GB model if customers go for the monthly incremental payment plan of $20/month for 24 months; or $579 upfront. That is slightly less than a non-contract factory unlocked iPhone 5, which costs $649.

There is, however, no sign of T-Mobile USA at Apple's own site. It's possible that the carrier's no-contract Simple Choice plans make selling them on Apple's site problematic. It's unclear if the carrier will join the other Big Four carriers on Apple's site.

As T-Mobile had revealed previously, it will begin shipping iPhone orders on April 12.

On Thursday, as it gave guidance for its Q1 2013 results, T-Mobile USA said that it had managed to net 579,000 new users.
