T-Mobile rumors say no more cheap smartphones, no more contracts, and low prices

T-Mobile announced late last year that it would be changing the way it does business, and today rumors are swirling about their plans. According to a March 20 column by Dwight Silverman, technology expert at the Houston Chronicle, T-Mobile's plans for a new "uncarrier pricing" have leaked.

There is a big T-Mobile announcement planned for March 26 in New York, and it is already been established that T-Mobile is backing away from subsidizing the price of smartphones in exchange for lengthy contracts. Silverman has posted specific information that has leaked regarding the different tiers of pricing within T-Mobile’s uncarrier pricing that will be available and the changes that are being made. One interesting fact that may attract many customers is a truly unlimited plan for $70 a month.

Besides an unlimited plan for those who desire to move away from stress over data usage, there are still T-Mobile metered plans that incorporate some changes to deal with overages. Supposedly, T-Mobile’s entire service plan menu will see an adjustment in price.

Verizon went to shared measured data plans for all new accounts over a year ago. Existing unlimited data customers who purchase new phones with Verizon must pay full-price for a 4G phone to maintain their unlimited account. Unlimited data accounts using a 3G device, like the iPhone 4S, are subject to data throttling on busy sites and at peak times, according to CNet.com.

T-Mobile is obviously seeking to be competitive in their monthly plans, seeing competition from Sprint's unlimited plan and the rising popularity of prepaid plans that feature unlimited data.

What we will see next will be an increased competition causing price wars on smartphones, or at least customers can hope for that to happen.
