The CEO of T-Mobile confirmed in a Friday tweet that customers will get 200MB of data free every month on their new entry-level iPad data plans, according to a Nov 1 report in MacRumors. Friday was the first day that customers could buy an iPad Air and sign up for the free monthly 200MB of data in T-Mobile's entry-level data plan.
Earlier in the day there was some confusion about what customers had to do to get the 200MB of free monthly data. Customers noticed that T-Mobile's website seemed to suggest that customers had to pay a $10.00 monthly “On Demand” fee to receive the free 200MB a month of data. Last week when T-Mobile executives announced the new 200MB of free data in their entry-level data plan however, they said that there were no strings attached to getting this free data each month.
Mr. Legere's tweet clarified T-Mobile's entry-level data plan:
“Everyone gets the 200MB of free data. No exceptions. No strings attached.” - @JohnLegere
T-Mobile later apologized for the mistake on its website.
What's so cool about this offer is that consumers can either buy an iPad (or any tablet) at T-Mobile or bring in a compatible iPad (or tablet). That means that a price-savvy customer can go to Walmart, for example, trade-in their old iPad, use the store credit to purchase the new iPad Air at the discounted rate (because of the Walmart price cut), then go to T-Mobile and sign up for the entry-level data plan to get the 200MB of free data each month. Wow!
T-Mobile is offering this 200MB free data plan every month for iPads (and tablets) because T-Mobile wants to expand its share of the mobile broadband market.
