Not long after John Legere,CEO of Bellevue-based T-mobile, introduced the JUMP! (just upgrade my phone) in July of this year he said there was more to come in their “un-carrier” campaign. Today we learn that the next step will finally be revealed this Wednesday in a big media event in New York with inter-national pop star Shakira. Other than the date of the event Mr. Legere has been tight-lipped about the details, whether Shakira with be replacing Carly as the T-Mobile spokesperson or just giving an onstage performance.
“I’ve made it clear, we’re not done,” he said in August. “Un-Carrier 3.0 is already scheduled, and you can trust it’s going to do two things. It’s going to solve another customer pain point and it’s going to unveil another weakness of the major players, with an inability for them to respond.”
It was in March of this year that Mr. Legere first introduced us to T-Mobile's “un-carrier” campaign. The plan he revealed then was to uncouple smartphones from the cellular plan so that there would not be those hidden fees that drive up the price. That way you free to buy the smartphone outright and not be locked into one plan for the standard 2 years. Shortly after they introduced this we found that it was only step one in the campaign.
A few months later we were introduced to the second phase as T-Mobile rolled out JUMP! (just upgrade my phone). This plan would allow customers buy a 10 dollar/month policy that would acts as both insurance for lost or stolen smartphones as well as letting upgrade every 6 months instead of 2 years. Shortly after T-Mobile's plan AT&T introduced their own version called Next.
Around the sametime that T-Mobile introduced their “un-carrier” campaign their spokesgirl Carly seemed to disappear. This sparked some rumors that the Bellevue-based company fired the T-Mobile girl. In July Carly showed up once again at a media event in New York for T-Mobile. Since she has not been in their commercials and with Shakira's involvement brings up the question again on the future of the motorcycle riding Carly.
