Wait, I haven't writing an article in a month? Hang on, need a topic, need a topic, ah...
So Standard is rotating in six weeks from now and it's time to start getting ready for when we lose 50% of the format as M13 and the Innistrad block leave. Which I think is awesome because the format it very close to when Alara was rotating out. Yes, that is because we are losing all the cards that make Jund good. Granted we are losing so much of all the good decks. Here's the list of cards we get to say god buy to...
Cavern of Souls - Since Cavern was released we have been living in a world where countering dorks just doesn't happen. The downside of this is that we lose the freedom to have some really smooth mana bases. In fact the one deck I want to play, Slivers, needs this to make sure I have the correct mana to cast my dudes. The cool thing is that tribal isn't that big in Modern or Legacy so the price of these are going to crash hard after rotation. So if you have these are aren't using them in a deck it time to trade/sell them off fast.
Thundermaw Hellkite - Ding-dong the reign of fire is coming to an end. Post rotation we can once again fly the friendly skies without fear getting our X/1's fliers eaten. Also it's another card that isn't part of a speed deck in Modern so it's going to drop, better find someone that needs it for their Cube fast.
Hellrider - A sleeper card 12 months ago that become a format all-star. Nice to see you ending on top there buddy. With the Sorin vs Tibalt printing this has already started to drop in price fast. Granted I think once a bunch flood the trade market your going to see this find a home in Modern as the top end of Red Deck Wins. I would wait till getting closer to rotation then scooping up a set for RDW and other Modern Aggro decks.
M10/INN Duals - Double edged sword on this. The M10 duals are going to drop fast once rotation hits with four straight prinitngs, but the INN duals are going to do a drive and rise even higher. As the market floods with copies post rotation they will go nuts when we hit the Modern PTQ season. So get them now before they go crazy later on.
Huntmaster of the Fells - This is going to do the same price adjust as the INN duals. We're going to have a small flood of copies that drop the price then a rise when everyone remembers that Jund is good in Modern.
Thragtusk - Thragtusk has been falling in price and should drop a few more dollars after rotation, but Commander and Cube will keep this a $5 card for years to come.
Olivia, Voldaren - See Huntmaster above.
Bonfire of the Damned - See Thragtusk above.
Sorin, Lord of Innistrad - See Thragtusk above.
Geist of Saint Traft - Is still going to be $ because he is a three drop in the most powerful control colors of all formats.
Bant Hexproof, Jund, Junk, and R/G are all dead as we know them post rotation as they lose both key creatures and spells. Let's face it there weren't all that many impressive dorks in Rav block and the impressive ones weren't up to par with those from Innistrad block and M13.
So what cards should we be looking towards for next season? Well, the big names this past year have to be...
The Jace twins - Both Jaces have theire roles to play in different decks so having a set of the each is going to be a good call.
Obzedat, Ghost Council - Backed up with good removal this is seven a turn to the face, and has proven to be good enough for constructed.
Angel of Serenity - It feel out of competitive when we could no longer reanimate it with all the graveyard hate dorks. This is going to see play as the top end of the control decks.
Sphinx's Revelation - Speaking of control decks. When Jund dies we are going to see UW comeback.
Boros Reckoner - If we get a good W/R dual land this is going to see play, if we don't then, it will still see play.
Assemble the Legion - Another card that will see play if we have a mana base to build Boros or Naya. I'm going to make sure i have two of them on hand for brewing.
Loxodon Smiter - Control is going to make a come back and this is going to become a great tool verse it.
Voice of Resurgence - Another anti-control card that will be staying in the format. Yeah, I really wish I would have picked these up earlier. Granted post rotation this will drop in price as we see UW control and wrath effects jump up in numbers, but still these are going to be a big part of the metagame.
Combat Medic - It was a hit for a time but has become a sleeper. I'm calling this to pick back up again after rotation as a Standard staple card.
Thorncaster Sliver - I'm not really calling this as a pick up for Standard as much as I am for Modern. It's true that I want to try RUG, or Four Color, Slivers in Standard, but I really want to play RUG Slivers in Modern for fun. Cloning this with haste effects and pump slivers and fast mana slivers is going to be nuts. Also in Modern we have a red sliver that has sliver cycling and gives all slivers the ablity to find this guy.
Deadbore, Abrupt Decay, Putrefy - The best removals in the game right here.
Rav Duals - Yeah, if you haven't finished out your playsets yet, you better becasue once rotation hits this are going to climb back up in price.
Maze's End - Yes, I know the combo deck is janky, but it's a combo deck, which means someone is going to try to play it. So having foils on hand as trade bait is a great idea.
In the end I think we are going to see some UW Control decks, Red Decks Wins, Junk control hater, Boros aggro, White Weenie, and Naya Blitz for sure as the decks at the start of the next season. Those are all my thoughts on what the future holds. I'm going to start working on some decks and testing out some ideas as the spoilers start to roll out. I'm going to be doing a few Limited PTQs on MTGO the next two Sundays as well as hitting up FNM at Eagle Hill in PI so I'll have some tournament reports in the future. That's all for now.
