Syrian forces kill more than 60 people in Homs

In a major assault by Syrian security forces, more than 60 people were killed on Thursday in the city of Homs, a city which is considered the microcosm of the Syrian uprising.

"The regime is paving the way to commit a massacre in order to extinguish the revolution in Homs," said a statement from the Syrian National Council.

Homs, Syria’s third largest city, has a diverse religious community which includes more than 1.5 million people.

The Syrian National Council has condemned the killing of a key figure of the Syrian Revolution, Father Basilious Nassar who was a vocal figure.

The Council believes that this is one of the ways by which the Syrian regime wishes to incite religious and tribal hate between Syrians.

The 10-month-old uprising which began last March is inching closer to the Syrian capital and is gaining momentum throughout the country.

According to the United Nations, more than 5,000 people, including 300 children, have been killed in the on-going  uprising.
