Syracuse takes on Providence tonight in what could be a trap game

With all the talk of just the second sell-out in Dome history for a basketball game, Carmelo Anthony’s jersey being retired into the rafters, and the last ever regular season meeting between Syracuse and very dangerous and ultimate rival Georgetown team as members of the Big East; there is a little game taking place tonight. That would come in the form of the Providence Friars.

About Providence

  • Providence certainly has blackboard material with all the talk centering on the above. They may not need any. The Friars while traditionally pushed around by Syracuse if you look at the overall record in the Big East rivalry (SU leads 47-10) they usually are more than willing to run & gun with the Cuse. They also have some 3-point shooters that have been hot during a 4-game winning streak that includes wins over then #21 Notre Dame last Saturday 71-54 and #17 Cincinnati 54-50, they have also taken down Villanova 54-52, and USF 76-66. This was nearly a 5-game streak for the Friars as they lost to UConn by three in OT, 82-79.

Let’s also not lose sight that Providence gave Syracuse all they could handle at home on January 9th with the Orange earning a 72-66 decision. The Friars come into their own last regular season game in the Dome as a BE member with a run, a chip on their shoulder, and hunting for another big win to boost their tourney worthiness with a record of 14-11 overall and 6-7 Big East.

Trap game? This one certainly has all the ingredients.

Game: Wed, Feb 20 7:00 PM ET ESPN2
