Sykesville's September Song to present musical Gypsy

Single parenting, stripteases, and show business

September Song Community Theatre is presenting Gypsy, a rollicking musical loosely based on the memoirs of famous 1950s striptease artist Gypsy Rose Lee. The musical focuses on her mother, Rose, who was the ultimate show business mom before Toddlers & Tiaras became a pop-culture hit. You think being a single mom is difficult? Add to that an attempt to rise to the top of the show business industry with one multitalented child and one who could not shimmy her way out of a plastic trash bag.

Well-known songs from the musical include "Everything's Coming Up Roses" and "Let Me Entertain You," with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim of West Side Story fame.

Backstory

Gypsy, the least popular and talented of the two daughters, paved her own way into show business by creating her own style of striptease, purely by accident. One night, while attempting to entertain a bored audience, Gypsy's dress strap broke during a song and she struggled to keep her jiggly parts covered, much like Niecy Nash during a Dancing with the Stars routine. This delighted the crowd, and Gypsy knew she had found her angle. She continued to woo the crowds with her stripteases; however, her act was more about comedy and less about nudity (she revealed very little flesh, in fact, and kept herself covered with the stage curtain at the end of each show).
