There are a lot of reality TV shows on the Syfy channel which are imaginative and engaging (barring Total Blackout). The Robot Combat League premiere treats viewers to something out of science fiction novels. Two huge robots duke it out in a ring while controlled by human handlers from their footwork to the knockout punches.
While the robots aren't as advanced as in the scifi action movie, Real Steel, the robots are surprisingly advanced and very impressive. The robots come out larger than life sporting tons of armor and a mean right hook. Perhaps the most surprising guest on the reality show is Amanda Lucas, a MMA fighter and daughter of Star Wars legend George Lucas.
In the premiere, the robots are introduced to the teams and are given a sparring challenge - to hit a target on another robot with a solid punch. The top team will be pitted against the bottom team in the challenge. The top team was George and Bayano controlling the steel behemoth, Steel Cyclone. On the other end, the bottom team headed by father-daughter team Amber and Dave control the steel-cage encased robot, Crash.
The surrounding steel rods on Crash proved to be a godsend to Amber and Dave who floundered badly in Round One. Steel Cyclone landed some serious blows, enough to send sparks flying from Crash and disconnecting Crash's left arm. George and Bayano's overconfidence, however, proved to be their downfall. They never considered Amber or Dave serious competition, so when Crash rallied in Round Two it was a complete shock to Steel Cyclone's team.
Crash landed a devasting blow to Steel Cyclone's left arm, leaving it dangling and useless as hydraulic fluid spurted on the floor. It was an unexpected defeat and possibly hints that not all robots are created equal on Robot Combat League. If Crash wasn't enclosed in the steel protective cage, Amber and Dave surely would be going home after Round One of the robot combat match.
